Why Storage Matters
Peptides are chains of amino acids held together by bonds that are stable under the right conditions and vulnerable under the wrong ones. Heat, light, moisture, and freeze-thaw cycling each degrade peptide structure through different mechanisms, and critically, none of them produce a visible change until the damage is severe. A vial can look completely normal while having lost a meaningful fraction of its potency. Correct storage is the real defense, because the problem cannot be seen coming.
Storing Lyophilized (Unreconstituted) Powder
- Refrigerate at 2–8°C. This is the standard, reliable storage condition for unreconstituted powder, and it is what a normal household refrigerator provides.
- Freeze at −20°C for extended storage. Unlike a liquid solution, dry powder has no free water to form damaging ice crystals, so freezing lyophilized peptide is a safe option for long-term storage. Let the vial return to room temperature before reconstituting — puncturing a cold vial can cause condensation on the powder.
- Avoid heat above 25°C and direct sunlight. Cars, windowsills, and uninsulated packaging left outdoors are the most common ways powder is damaged before it is even used.
- Keep it sealed. Leave the aluminum crimp cap and rubber stopper intact until ready to reconstitute. An intact seal protects against both oxygen and ambient moisture.
Storing a Reconstituted Solution
- Refrigerate at 2–8°C immediately, with no exceptions. Every extra minute at room temperature costs some of the solution's usable life.
- Never freeze a reconstituted solution. Ice crystals physically shear peptide bonds and destroy structure. A vial that has been frozen and thawed should be discarded even if it looks unchanged, since the damage is not visible.
- Expect a usable window of roughly 25–30 days when reconstituted with bacteriostatic water and refrigerated properly. If reconstituted with plain sterile water (no preservative), that window shrinks to 24–48 hours, since nothing is inhibiting bacterial growth in the vial.
Light, Position, and Handling
Light. Peptides are sensitive to UV and visible light, which can trigger oxidation in certain amino acid residues. Store vials in the dark — a closed refrigerator handles this naturally — and use an opaque bag or foil for brief transport.
Position. Store reconstituted vials upright. On its side, solution pools against the rubber stopper, which can degrade the seal and increase the risk of contamination over repeated punctures.
Handling. Swab the stopper with an alcohol swab before every single puncture, whether it is the first draw or the thirtieth. Label every reconstituted vial with its mixing date — after roughly a month, discard any remainder regardless of appearance, since potency loss does not announce itself visually.
