How it works

GHK-Cu is a copper complex of the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine. It is studied mainly in cell, animal, cosmetic, and small topical human studies. Mechanistic findings about collagen, extracellular-matrix remodeling, or gene expression do not establish that an injected or topical commercial product produces a clinical benefit.

Route is central: topical skin exposure, application to a treated wound, and systemic injection are not equivalent. The evidence and risks for one route cannot be transferred to another.

Benefits & side effects

In a randomized study after carbon-dioxide laser resurfacing, only 13 patients completed follow-up. Objective computer and blinded assessments found no significant advantage for GHK-Cu in redness resolution, wrinkles, or overall skin quality, although patient-reported satisfaction favored the GHK-Cu regimen.[1]

A 45-person hair-loss study tested a combination of 5-aminolevulinic acid plus GHK—not GHK-Cu alone—and reported improved hair counts in some groups but no significant differences in length or thickness.[2] It cannot isolate the contribution of GHK or support injectable use. Broad claims about wound healing, hair restoration, whole-body repair, or anti-aging exceed this evidence.
