How it works

Gonadorelin is synthetic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), a decapeptide that stimulates pituitary release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Its very short physiological signal is not interchangeable with long-acting GnRH agonists or antagonists, whose exposure patterns and clinical effects differ.

Names require care. Gonadorelin, gonadorelin acetate, and gonadorelin hydrochloride describe related active moieties or salts, but a salt name does not establish the formulation, route, strength, purity, or regulatory status of a finished product.

Benefits & side effects

Gonadorelin stimulation can provoke measurable LH and FSH responses and remains used in some diagnostic settings outside the former U.S. product. A modern retrospective study of 67 males undergoing a GnRH stimulation test found that an FSHB promoter variant altered measured pituitary responses, illustrating that interpretation depends on biology and context.[4]

The diagnostic literature also documents limitations. An older study of 92 women found substantial response overlap across healthy and diseased groups and concluded that the quantitative response did not provide reliable diagnosis or prognosis by itself.[5] A hormone rise is a pharmacodynamic response, not proof of improved fertility, preservation of spermatogenesis during testosterone therapy, higher testosterone, better libido, or anti-aging benefit.
