How it works
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide — a chain of seven amino acids — built from the sequence of tuftsin, a naturally occurring immune-signaling tetrapeptide, with an added Pro-Gly-Pro extension.[1] It was developed in Russia and is studied mainly as a nootropic and anxiolytic compound, proposed to reduce anxiety and support cognitive function, though the evidence behind those labels is uneven.
Selank has a prescription history in Russia, where it has been studied and used clinically for anxiety-related conditions, but it has no equivalent regulatory standing in the United States.[2] That regional gap is one of the most important things to understand about how Selank is discussed online versus how it is actually regulated.
Benefits & side effects
Human evidence for Selank is small, early, and concentrated in Russian clinical literature. A 2008 study compared Selank against the benzodiazepine medazepam in 62 patients with generalized anxiety disorder and neurasthenia, reporting broadly similar anxiolytic effects between the two.[4] A 2014 study compared Selank with another benzodiazepine, phenazepam, in 60 patients with phobic-anxiety and somatoform disorders, again reporting anxiolytic benefit alongside mild nootropic effects.[5]
These studies are clinically interesting but limited by small sample sizes, regional publication context, and comparator drugs not standard in U.S. practice. Cognitive, neuroprotective, and stress-resilience claims rest on an even thinner base — mostly rodent studies of memory and chronic-stress models — and should be read as preliminary rather than established.[6]
