How it works
BPC-157 is a synthetic 15-amino-acid peptide, or pentadecapeptide, based on a sequence originally studied in human gastric juice. It is also known in the literature as body protection compound 157, bepecin, or PL 14736.[1] Databases such as PubChem and NCATS Inxight Drugs list it as an investigational compound, not an approved medicine.
The peptide has attracted attention because it is unusually stable in water and gastric conditions compared to many other peptides, which made it a convenient tool for laboratory research into gut, tendon, and wound-healing biology. Stability in a test tube, however, says nothing about whether the compound works safely in humans.
Benefits & side effects
The vast majority of BPC-157 evidence comes from animal and cell studies. Rat studies reported accelerated healing of surgically cut Achilles tendons, and separate rodent work examined gastric ulcers, colitis, and other gastrointestinal injury models.[3][7] A 2025 systematic review of BPC-157 in orthopedic sports medicine characterized the available evidence as mostly low-level, with limited human data.[21]
Human evidence is sparse and preliminary: a registered Phase 1 safety and pharmacokinetics trial in healthy volunteers, a small retrospective report on intra-articular use for knee pain, and a small 2024 pilot study in 12 women with interstitial cystitis reporting symptom improvement after a single intravesical treatment.[12][13][14] These early reports are hypothesis-generating, not proof of efficacy, and none involved the large, controlled, randomized design needed to establish a treatment effect.
