How it works

Oxytocin is an endogenous cyclic nonapeptide involved in uterine contraction and milk ejection. Synthetic oxytocin injection is also a prescription medicine. Those two facts do not establish that every route, formulation, or behavioral claim involving oxytocin is medically effective.

The current Pitocin product is a defined injectable solution for intravenous infusion or intramuscular use in obstetric care.[1] A nasal spray, compounded preparation, or research vial is a different finished product with a different exposure pattern and regulatory status.

Benefits & side effects

A 24-week randomized placebo-controlled trial in 290 children and adolescents with autism found no significant between-group improvement in its primary social-withdrawal outcome or secondary social and cognitive measures.[2] A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials in schizophrenia found no consistent benefit for negative or positive symptoms; an apparent high-dose signal disappeared when an outlier study was removed.[3]

These results do not prove that oxytocin has no central nervous system effects. They do show that a plausible mechanism and small early experiments are insufficient to support a dependable psychiatric or social-performance treatment.
